No Place Like Om
I am very pleased with how beautifully these Om mugs turned out. Inside is a lovely shade of azure blue; a blue that reflects the depth of your soul. The Om and royal blue stylized vine pattern wrap all the way around the outside of the mug, and over this is a velvety matt finish. This is the best my transparent matt has ever turned out. The manufacturer recommends slow firing, so when the kiln started looking quite red, perhaps 20 minutes before reaching a final temperature of about 1,900°, I turned the kiln from high back down to medium and left it there for about an hour and a half. I was actually wondering if it would reach temperature while on medium, so after about 90 minutes when it appeared not to have changed much, I put it on high again, and after just five more minutes, it was done. Finally figured out how to get a solid matt finish on my mugs. They just feel so nice to touch.
This OM mug makes a great gift handmade in Asheville, and do I need to remind you that the holidays are fast approaching? I have a batch of nine, and I expect them to go fast. Because they are all hand-painted, no two will be exactly alike. Expect to find small variations in the pattern, but all are equally lovingly and painstakingly glazed with the care of an artist with obsessive compulsive personality disorder. In the words of Homer Simpson, "Doh!"
